Day 10: Community Relations
Proverbs 24:32: (NIV) “I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw.”
Our ship had recently completed a number of difficult tasks and training now topped our crowded agenda, the JFK strike group sailors had committed themselves to conduct a community relations project for Brower County in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Some of our sailors became carpenters and painters for Habitat for Humanity. Another group brought mirth and merriment to hospitalized children. From admiral to seaman, our diplomacy and hospitality were on display for all to see. The recipients of our services won’t soon forget, and neither will we!
These community projects accomplish at least two things. Sailors are able to display a side of themselves that many might not know exists. When the question was asked, “Does anyone know about carpentry?” I was surprised at the hands that went up. Many skills became apparent. To see a salty sailor lovingly read to sick and suffering children, some of whom were starved for attention, was to witness humanity at its best. The groups that witnessed our efforts will always remember the dedication and love we brought to each setting. Our sailors left a piece of themselves but took away far more. Our prayer:
Lord, make me a blessing, particularly for those who are in need,
I want to show my love for others, that I truly care, indeed.
I, they can gain so much when we lovingly give our all in all,
There are no losers only winners when we heed our Master’s call.
Questions to Consider:
- Have I helped someone less fortunate today?
- Have I considered the possibility of doing more?
Reflection for the Day:
- Consider the mission of reconciliation by our Lord. Think about how life would be if Jesus had not come to help us.
